Ever
since I have become interested in astronomy, asteroids attracted me. But
in romanian astronomy books the asteroids are treated on a page or two.
That's why I didn't know what I could do. Until I found in "Pulsar"
magazine an article by Gerard Faure on observing asteroids. Himself observed
2000 asteroids, visually. It seemed an easy job. An ephemeris, charts and an instrument. Not counting weather. For ephemeris one could use the internet: there are many sites which compute ephemeris for any asteroid. Every major astronomy software can compute asteroid ephemerids. The best are : SkyMap , Cartes du Ciel , Minor Planet Observer, HNSKy , Minor Planet Software. And I'm sure there are others but I don't use them. Many atlases are good for hand plotting asteroidal paths. But, again, use a software and a printer it's easy. The instruments are very important: the larger the aperture the highest number of observable asteroids. The method I use is the following: I search the field until I found the asteroid, using a chart of course. Then I wait a day and I search the asteroid again. When I have two sightings I'm sure I have observed an asteroid. Sometimes it's possible to se the movement of an asteroid in an hour or two, using high power. This method works well in rich star fields. I have observed, until now, 79 asteroids visually. Below is a table with a list of the asteroids observed until now (July 2003).
